One of Frank’s earlier projects was the discovery of the USS Flier in 2009.
The USS Flier was a 1525-ton Gato class submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, commissioned in mid-October
1943.
In early August 1944 Flier left Fremantle, Australia, for her second war patrol.
On 13 August, while transiting shallow water to enter the South China Sea, she struck a mine and quickly sank.
Fourteen of 86 crewmen escaped, but only eight survived the subsequent long swim to reach shore.
The wreck was found in 100m of water in the Balabac Straits in the southern Philippines, thanks to the use of a
Side Scan Sonar which located the wreck of the sub.
